Oct. 6, 2008
WASHINGTON - The No. 20 American University field hockey team was rewarded with three Patriot League Players of the Week following a 2-0 record in which the Eagles outscored their opponents 7-0 over two games. Irene Schickhardt's 11 point weekend garnered her Offensive Player of the Week plaudits, while three points and two shutouts earned Anne-Meike De Wiljes Defensive Player of the Week and Alyssa Poorman's two flawless performances gave the junior her third Goalkeeper of the Week award this season.
Schickhardt scored three goals and added an assist in the Eagles' 4-0 win over Holy Cross and then chipped in two more goals in the 3-0 win over La Salle, giving her 11 points in two games. She scored the game-winner in both games and moved into a tie for fifth in career points (114) with Sage Asteak (1996-99). She moved into fifth in career goals (40), and a tie for fifth in career assists (32). This is Schickhardt's first honor of the season and sixth weekly award of her career (four rookie, two offensive).
De Wiljes played a huge part in two shutouts over the weekend for the Eagles and added offensively by contributing three assists, all on penalty corners. She assisted Schickhardt's game-winner on Sunday against La Salle. This is her fifth-career weekley award (four defensive, one rookie).
Poorman was perfect in goal over two games this weekend for the Eagles, recording two wins, in shutout form, for her third and fourth scoreless performances of the season. She made five total saves, en route to her 10th career PL weekly award (nine goalkeeper, one rookie).
The Eagles head to New York for a two-game road stint against PL foe Colgate on Saturday at 11 a.m. before heading to No. 2 Syracuse for a 2 p.m. start.
