AU Field Hockey Sweeps Patriot League Weekly Honors

WASHINGTON - The No. 15 ranked American University field hockey team opened its 2008 season with a pair of wins to earn the inaugural AU Invitational Title and was rewarded by sweeping the Patriot League Weekly Awards. The Eagles took a 4-0 decision over New Hampshire on Saturday and then went on to claim a 2-0 win over No. 19 ranked University at Albany on Sunday.

Junior forward Emily Stovicek was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week. Stovicek scored her first collegiate points off of a goal and an assist against New Hampshire and added the insurance goal in the match against Albany.

Anne van Erp was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week. The sophomore chipped in the game-winning assist in the win over New Hampshire and tallied two shots on the weekend.

Junior goalkeeper Alyssa Poorman was named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week, after posting two shutouts, including a seven-save performance over the nationally ranked Great Danes. Poorman made 10 saves total on the weekend.

Lastly, freshman Natalie Ellenberger earned the nod as Patriot League Rookie of the Week after tallying a goal in her collegiate debut against New Hampshire. Ellenberger's only shot of the season went in as the fourth goal in the Eagles' 4-0 win over the Wildcats.
