The American University field hockey program is excited to welcome back one of its all-time greats, as Head Coach Steve Jennings announced the return of 2014 alumna Shelly Montgomery as an assistant coach.

"We are so happy to welcome back Shelly to the AU Field Hockey family," Jennings said. "Shelly's passion is contagious and the standard of excellence she embodies makes her a perfect fit for our program.  I know that her skill-sets will help push us to the next level and enrich the lives of our student-athletes in the process."

Montgomery had quite the career at AU, including a 2013 Second Team All-America honor, two NFHCA Mid-Atlantic Region First Team awards, the 2013 Patriot League Tournament MVP and Offensive Player of the Year awards.  She was also a three-time Academic All-Patriot League selection and NFHCA Division I Academic Squad selection.  The two-time team captain closed her career as the No. 9 scorer in program history with 93 points throughout her four years.

Montgomery earned her B.S. in health promotion in 2014 and immediately transitioned into the collegiate coaching scene, serving as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator at Georgetown from April 2014 to May 2015.  She has also worked with USA Field Hockey since 2014 as a coach with the Futures Level One Site at the University of Maryland.  She is USA Field Hockey Level One and Two certified.

"I am excited to be back at AU and to be part of a team and coaching staff that is committed to excellence on and off the field," Montgomery said. "It's an honor to serve the program and institution that has made a significant impact on my life as a player and a person."
