Senior Maura Jacobs waves to the crowd before a game

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Just one day after being selected as the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year, senior Maura Jacobs was chosen for her second consecutive PL Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor, the league office released on Wednesday.

The American University field hockey program has a long tradition of PL Scholar-Athletes of the Year as the Eagles have now earned the award for five consecutive years and nine total since joining the Patriot League in 2001.

Joining Jacobs with Academic All-Patriot League honors were seniors Annaka Groschinski and Rafaela Rubas, who was also selected for a major award on Tuesday as the 2018 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and All-Patriot League First Team. This was the first Academic All-PL nod for Groschinski and the second consecutive for Rubas.

Voting for the awards was conducted by the league's field hockey sports information contacts, who were not able to vote for their own student-athletes.

Jacobs continued to lead the team from the cage this year and closed the regular season as one of the top keepers in the league after picking up her 200th career save against No. 4 UConn during the season finale on Sunday. She will enter the Patriot League Tournament this weekend with a league-leading 1.55 goals against average and the No. 3 save percentage (.730).

This is also a repeat awards season for Rubas, who has now closed two consecutive regular seasons with PL Offensive Player of the Year and Academic All-PL awards. The Vienna, Austria, native solidified her spot in the AU record books this season as the No. 10 goal scorer in program history with 38 career goals. She is also tied for No. 8 in the career all-time top ten for assists (28) and is eighth for total points (104).

Groschinski has stepped up as one of the top defenders in the Patriot League this season, leading the league in assists with a career-high nine throughout the regular season. She enters postseason play ranked 28th in Division I in the category with 0.50 per game. This is her first Academic All-Patriot League honor.

American and Bucknell led the league with three Academic All-Patriot League selections followed by Lehigh with two and Boston University, Holy Cross and Lafayette with one each.

The Eagles will travel to Boston University next weekend for the Patriot League Tournament. No. 2-seed American will face No. 3-seed Bucknell at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2. The PL Championship game will be held at noon on Sunday, Nov. 4.
