Rafaela Rubas, Maura Jacobs selected for Patriot League Major Awards

Patriot League Release

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The American University field hockey team was once again well-represented on the Patriot League teams, starting with seniors Rafaela Rubas and Maura Jacobs who were selected as the Offensive Player and Goalkeeper of the Year, respectively. Three other Eagles were selected to the All-League teams, the conference office released on Tuesday.

Voting for the All-Patriot League Teams and major awards was conducted by the Patriot League's seven field hockey head coaches, who were not allowed to cast votes for their own student-athletes or themselves.

For the second consecutive year, senior Rafaela Rubas started and ended her season as the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year. She accomplished the same feat as a junior after she helped lead the team with 32 points (12 goals, eight assists). This season, she has solidified her spot in the AU field hockey record books as the No. 10 goal scorer in program history with 38 career goals. She is also tied for No. 8 in the career all-time top ten for assists (28) and is eighth for total points (104).

Although this is the first Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year honor for senior Maura Jacobs, it is her second consecutive major league award after she was selected as the 2017 Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Jacobs has consistently been among the top goalkeepers in the league and closed the regular season with her 200th career save against No. 4 UConn. She will enter tournament play this weekend leading the league with a 1.55 goals against average and is ranked third for her .730 save percentage.

Both Rubas and Jacobs were selected to the First Team All-Patriot League alongside sophomore Noor Coenen. The Naarden, Netherlands, native closed the regular season leading the team with 24 points off nine goals and six assists. She also ranked second in the league for 1.53 points per game and .588 goals per game.

A pair of Eagles also earned spots on the Second Team All-Patriot League with seniors Megan Benson and Rachel Stefano. Both closed the regular season with new career-highs, including four goals and nine points from Benson and three goals for Stefano.

The Eagles will travel to Boston University next weekend for the Patriot League Tournament. No. 2-seed American will face No. 3-seed Bucknell at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2. The PL Championship game will be held at noon on Sunday, Nov. 4.
