Junior Rafaela Rubas vs. Louisville

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – For the second consecutive season, American University field hockey senior Rafaela Rubas was selected for a major award during the Patriot League Preseason Poll, after she was voted as the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year by the league's head coaches and sports information directors.

AU earned three selections to the Preseason All-League Team, including Rubas along with senior Maura Jacobs and sophomore Noor Coenen. The Eagles, who earned six of the 14 first-place votes, were predicted to finish second in the preseason poll behind defending champion Boston University.

Rubas closed her junior campaign as the 2017 PL Offensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-Mid-Atlantic Region selection after she earned career-highs in goals (12), assists (8) and points (32). She added her name to the AU record books with 85 career points to rank 12th in program history.

Coenen, who was voted as the 2017 PL Rookie of the Year and Second Team All-Mid-Atlantic Region, also had a memorable season after she led the team in scoring with 15 goals to tie for 10th in the record book for single-season goals. She also added three assists for a team-high 33 points.

Jacobs was a 2017 All-PL Second Team selection and the league's Scholar-Athlete of the Year as well as an NFHCA Scholar of Distinction. The senior goalkeeper had a career-best five shutouts and a 1.49 goals against average after tallying 48 saves last season.

The Eagles return seven of the starters from the 2017 squad that went 13-6 overall and 5-1 in the Patriot League. AU was second in the regular season behind BU before falling to Bucknell in the semifinal round of the Patriot League Tournament.

American will open its season at home on Friday, Aug. 25, at 1 p.m. against Richmond. The game will also serve as the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the renovated William I Jacobs Recreational Complex.
