BOSTON - The American University field hockey team closed its season with a tough overtime loss to Bucknell during Friday's Patriot League Tournament semifinal.
The Eagles concluded the 2017 season with an overall record of 13-6 and 5-1 in the PL. The Bison will advance into the championship game against host Boston at 10-9 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
Senior Haley Bowcutt tabbed the Eagles' only goal of the game midway through the second half off of a collected rebound after a penalty corner.
Bucknell's Nicole Rupnik scored the equalizer off an assist from Lexi Quick with less than five minutes, pushing the game into two scoreless overtime periods.
The Eagles offense dominated the majority of the game, putting up 22 shots to Bucknell's five and gaining 12 penalty corners to the Bison's three. PL Rookie of the Year Noor Coenen led the team with five shots on goal, followed by juniors Lucy Whalley and Rafaela Rubas, the PL Offensive Player of the Year, who both had two. But a stellar performance from Bucknell goalkeeper Emily Finn kept AU at bay, pushing the game through two overtime periods and into a shootout round.
Finn continued to fend off the Eagles during the shootout, stopping all three attempts from junior Rachel Stefano, senior Leah DiGiandomenico, and sophomore Kathryn Roncoroni. The Bison, however, were able to capitalize during the final round of play, as Chloe Poltonavage, M.C. Evans, and finally Kaelyn Long all found the back of the net to secure the victory.
