WASHINGTON - The American University field hockey team celebrated senior day with a 3-1 win over Lafayette on Saturday, closing its 2017 regular season home and Patriot League schedules.
The Eagles now rise to 12-4 overall, 5-1 in the Patriot League, while the Leopards fall to 6-9 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
Among the contributors to AU's final goal tally was one of the team's six seniors as Anne Waverly Spencer notched the team's second goal of the game midway through the second half. Sophomore Jette Dieckmann put the Eagles up on the board with her first career goal late in the first half, and junior Rafaela Rubas clinched the final goal of the game off a penalty stroke in the second half.
Seniors Haley Bowcutt and Alexandra Morris also contributed to the stats sheet on their senior day. Bowcutt tallied her eighth assist of the season while Morris came away with a save on the day. Sophomore Kathryn Roncoroni added another assist, bringing her total up to two this season for 16 points.
Lafayette was led by Lisa van der Geest, who put away the Leopards' only goal of the day off an assist from Rosie Shanks and Ellen Colbourne. Goalkeeper Sarah Park put up a pair of saves in her 70 minutes in the cage.
Both teams had a slow start to the match, as neither side was able to get a shot off until the 14th minute when AU freshman Lauren Fredricks put a rocket just over Lafayette's crossbar.
Lafayette had its first opportunity five minutes later with a couple of quick penalty corners where Morris nabbed her first save of the day.
Dieckmann opened the scoring for the match with less than seven minutes left in the half, taking a long pass from Roncoroni right in front of the net before blasting a shot past the Lafayette goalkeeper.
The Leopards were quick to respond in the second half, tallying their only goal of the game within the first two minutes off an early penalty corner opportunity.
The game remained in deadlock for almost 20 minutes before Bowcutt fed in a nice pass from the end line to Waverly Spencer, who weaved in the shot from behind the goalie.
Rubas clinched the win a few minutes later during a penalty stroke opportunity.
