@AU_FieldHockey Surges to 4-2 Win Over Colgate

Junior Rachel Stefano vs. Bucknell

WASHINGTON - The American University field hockey team put up a strong second half on Saturday to overcome Colgate on their home turf, 4-2.

The Eagles continue to hold the No. 2 spot in the Patriot League with a 4-1 conference record, 11-4 overall, while the Raiders are still in search of their first league victory at 0-5 at 2-11 overall.

AU had a well-rounded scoring effort with goals from freshman Noor Coenen, sophomore Kathryn Roncoroni, junior Rachel Stefano and senior Haley Bowcutt. Seniors Ann Waverly Spencer and Samantha McCormick also contributed an assist each.

Junior goalkeeper Maura Jacobs came away with two saves off of four shots on the day.

Freshman Michaela Corvi led the scoring efforts for Colgate with a pair of goals while senior Caroline Schaefer tallied an assist.

Senior goalkeeper Maria Krull did a lot of work to keep the Eagles at bay, tallying a season-high 20 saves throughout the match.

The Eagles controlled play early on, stringing together five penalty corners within the first 20 minutes before Roncoroni was able to capitalize off an insertion from Waverly Spencer, giving AU its first lead of the match.

Colgate was able to respond, though, as a pair of quick goals from Corvi in the 19th and 21st minutes gave the Raiders a 2-1 edge.

The Eagles would remain at a one-goal deficit until the final few minutes of the half, when Bowcutt snuck in a shot after a run along the end line to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the break.

AU started the second half aggressively, and an early shot from senior Leah DiGiandomenico was saved and picked up by Coenen, who blasted in a shot to give the Eagles a 3-2 advantage.

Stefano notched her second goal of the season 12 minutes later off a penalty corner insertion from Samantha McCormick, putting the Eagles out of reach from the Raiders for the remainder of the match.

The Eagles dominated the match overall, putting up 33 shots and drawing 16 penalty corners to Colgate's five shots and four penalty corners.

AU will return home for Senior Day and Alumnae Day on Saturday, Oct. 21, where they will have a noon showdown against Lafayette.
