WASHINGTON - Senior Haley Bowcutt helped lift the No. 22 American University field hockey team (5-2, 1-0 PL) to a decisive 4-0 victory over Bucknell (3-5, 0-1 PL) on Saturday, kicking off the team's home and conference schedules with her first career hat trick.
Bowcutt led the Eagles with her three-goal effort, followed by freshman Noor Coenen who tabbed her third career goal midway through the second half. Junior Rafaela Rubas contributed a pair of assists.
Junior Maura Jacobs put up two saves during her 70 minutes in net to tally her second consecutive shutout, fourth of the season.
The Eagles put up some good pressure early on, but tight defending from the Bison and some key saves from Bucknell goalkeeper Emily Finn kept AU off the board until midway through the second half. Coenen was the first to put a shot away, making a good run from outside the circle before launching the ball into the lower corner of the cage.
Bowcutt followed four minutes later with her first goal of the afternoon, taking a pass from Rubas in front of the net and shooting just wide of Bucknell's goalkeeper.
Bucknell put AU on the defensive over the next 12 minutes with a shot and a penalty corner opportunity before the Eagles pushed back into the Bisons' half with five minutes left in regulation. Bowcutt took advantage of that offensive push, putting away her second goal of the game unassisted before hitting her third off a cross from Rubas with 15 seconds left in play.
The Eagles will make a quick turnaround this weekend as the team returns to Jacobs Field on Sunday for a 1 p.m. start against Drexel. For the latest on AU Field Hockey, stay tuned to AUEagles.com and follow the team on Twitter @AU_FieldHockey.
