WASHINGTON - The American University field hockey team opened its two-game series in East Lansing, Mich., on Friday with a 1-0 victory over Michigan State.
"We are very happy with our performance today against a very tough Michigan State team," head coach Steve Jennings said. "We showed improved organization and desperation in our defensive structure which helped us contain their dangerous attack. We will learn and grow from this game and look forward to our next match on Sunday."
The Eagles now rise to 2-1 so far this season, while the Spartans draw even at 2-2.
Both the Eagles and the Spartans put up 10 shots throughout the game, with AU tallying four shots on goal to MSU's three. But it was a 41st-minute goal from senior Leah DiGiandomenico that proved to be the difference-maker, as AU gained a one-point advantage over MSU that would last until the final whistle.
The Eagles will return to MSU's Ralph Young Field on Sunday for a 1:30 p.m. start against Central Michigan. For the latest on AU Field Hockey, stay tuned to AUEagles.com and follow the team on Twitter @AU_FieldHockey.
