COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After a disappointing loss on Saturday, the 18th-ranked American University field hockey team rebounded with a 1-0 win over Drexel Sunday in the Terrapin Invitational, hosted by the University of Maryland. With the victory, the Eagles improve to 4-2 on the season, while the Dragons fall to 3-3 overall.
Sophomore Natalie Konerth put the Eagles on the board with less than four minutes remaining in the first half, taking a pass from freshman Leah DiGiandomenico to score her second goal of the season. It would prove to be the only score in a defensive battle that yielded just 11 shots.
Drexel, which held a 3-1 advantage on penalty corners in the first half, finished the game with seven total shots, while American took just four shots, including one in the second half.
AU goalkeeper Kate McBeath posted her fourth shutout of the season, coming up with three saves against the Dragons, including a stop in the final minute of play that prevented the game-tying goal.
American returns home next weekend, Sept. 20-21, for a pair of home games. The Eagles opens Patriot League play on Saturday at noon versus Lehigh, while taking on Princeton on Sunday at 2:00 p.m., in the annual Phil Jacobs event.
