Nov. 22, 2008

WASHINGTON - The American University women's basketball team has signed two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period, announced Eagles head coach Matt Corkery. Geleisa George and Stephanie Anya have made the commitment to join the Eagles for the 2009-10 season.

George, a 5-foot-9 point guard out of Jamaica, N.Y., plays for Bob Mackey at Christ the King Regional High School and averaged 14.6 ppg, 6.8 rpg and 4.2 apg a year ago. She is a three-year varsity player at Christ the King, being named a captain this year, and played nine years of AAU basketball for Positive Direction. George helped lead her high school team to the NY State Championship last season and was also named N.Y. Daily News Second Team. As a sophomore she earned N.Y. Daily News Honorable Mention and Queens Courier Honorable Mention. She was named to the 2009 Sporting News College Basketball East Regional High School Honorable Mention team and was ranked as the 28th best guard in the country by Hoopgurlz.com.

"Geleisa is a natural leader and model student-athlete on the court and in the classroom," said Corkery. "She has a winner's mentality and is a very hard worker. On the court, she is an athletic guard with an explosive first step and an excellent playmaker. Geleisa is one of those players who can make things happen on both ends of the floor and we are very excited she has chosen to continue her basketball career at American University."

Anya, a 6-foot-2 center out of Germantown, Md., plays for Russell Davis at The Academy of the Holy Cross, one of the top teams in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference and DC Metro area. She averaged 8.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg and 2.0 blocks per game. Anya helped lead her team to the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) championship during her sophomore year. She was named Second Team WCAC and 2nd Team Gazette as a junior.

"Stephanie knows how to compete and win and will add much needed depth in the post in helping us become a better rebounding team next season," said Corkery. She is a strong, talented player that has the potential to dominate the paint."
