WASHINGTON - The American University women's basketball team will look to win its third straight game to open the 2008-09 campaign on Wednesday when the Eagles welcome cross-city opponent Howard University to Bender Arena for a 7 p.m. tip-off. AU hasn't won three games to open a season since the 2001-02 season when they defeated Marshall, Southern and Towson in succession.

AU (2-0) holds a 9-7 advantage in the all-time series over Howard, but fell to the Bison in their last meeting, 74-65, on Dec. 12, 2005. Four current Eagles were active in that game, with redshirt junior Nicole Ryan leading AU in scoring with 16 points. In two games this season, the Eagles offense has been well spread, with seven players averaging at least five points a game. Sophomore Michelle Kirk leads the squad in scoring in the early season, averaging 14.0 points per game. Redshirt junior Nicole Ryan has scored double-digits in both games this season and is scoring 10.5 points per game. AU has played 12-deep in both games.

Howard (0-1) fell at Navy in its season-opener, 59-49. The Lady Bison held a 27-22 lead at the half on the scoring of Morgan Neal's nine points, but allowed the Mids a 17-5 run to open the second half and were never able to recover. Morgan led the Bison with 15 points.

Following Wednesday's tilt with Howard, American will embark on a three-game road trip that includes a pair of games at the University of Minnesota at the Subway Classic on Nov. 22-23. The Eagles will then return back to the region for a game at Morgan State in Baltimore on Nov. 28.
