WASHINGTON -
American University head women's basketball coach Melissa McFerrin announced that junior college transfer Rachel Brazell (Mansfield, Texas/Summit) has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Eagles.
"We are very excited to have Rachel joining our team," said McFerrin. "Her ability to score in a variety of ways is one of her biggest strengths. We feel like she will also bring leadership and a winning attitude to Eagle basketball."
In Brazell's two seasons at Midland, a member of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference, she was a First Team All-WJCAC selection as a sophomore and a First Team All-Region selection (NJCAA Region V). The 5-10 guard started in 51 out of 65 games in two seasons with the Lady Chaps, where she finished as the career leader in three pointers (137) and three point percentage (.433). Brazell averaged 2.9 rebounds per game and 12.6 points per game, including 15.5 ppg as a sophomore, while at Midland.
As a high school player at Summit, Brazell was a TGCA All-State and a First Team All-Dallas Fort Worth Area selection and was named District Offensive Most Valuable Player. She co-captained the Jaguars, setting the single-season and career three point records.
Brazell will help to fill the void left by senior guard Tala Hadavi (Uppsala, Sweden/Vasalundsskolan), who led American in scoring last season. Earlier this year, McFerrin and the Eagles signed a pair of high school forwards in Anna Baran (Rzeszow, Poland/SMS PZKosz Warsaw) and Paula Wargo (Port Clinton, Ohio/Port Clinton).
American finished the 2005-06 season with a 7-21 record but loses just two seniors to graduation.
