March 7, 2008

WEST POINT, N.Y - American University head women's basketball coach Melissa McFerrin was tabbed the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, conference officials announced Friday at the PL Tournament banquet. The award was voted on by the league's eight head coaches and is McFerrin's first such honor.

McFerrin has led American to one of its best seasons in program history. With a 17-12 overall record, including an 11-3 conference mark, the Eagles won their first-ever PL Regular Season Championship and head into the post-season tournament as the top seed. The 11 Patriot League wins are the most for the Eagles since joining the Patriot League in 2001 and the 17 overall victories are the most in the McFerrin era.

AU has won its last 10 games, including seven on the road. The 10 wins ties the program's longest winning streak, dating back to the 1997-98 season, while the road streak marks the most-ever wins accumulated outside Bender Arena.

McFerrin joins Liz Hayes (All-PL First Team), Stephanie N'Garsanet (All-PL Second Team) and Liz Leer (All-Rookie Team) as Eagles earning post-season honors from the conference.

The Eagles begin their quest for the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament bid Saturday when they play eighth seeded Colgate in the PL Quarterfinals at 12:00 noon at Army's Christl Arena.
