WASHINGTON - The American University women's basketball team will close the regular season portion of its schedule on Saturday at 12 noon at Lafayette. The Eagles, who are looking to win their tenth straight victory, have already clinched at least a share of the Patriot League regular season title and have guaranteed themselves the first or second seed heading in the tournament. The game can be seen live in the DC Metro area on RCN-TV Channel 8.
AU (16-12, 10-3) won its ninth game in a row on Wednesday when it beat Navy 69-37 at Bender Arena as the team honored its three graduating seniors, Stephanie N'Garsanet, Maggie Smith-Davidson and Liz Hayes. All three had big nights in the Eagles' win, as N'Garsanet recorded her first double-double of her career, with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Smith-Davidson had 10 rebounds, three assists and four steals, and Hayes scored 11 points and added seven assists.
Lafayette (14-14, 7-5) was on the downside of a 51-41 loss to Army on Wednesday. Vanessa Van De Venter recorded her fourth double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and adding a career-high 15 rebounds.
American University can clinch the first seed and an undefeated league road schedule with a win over Lafayette. The current six-game road winning streak the Eagles are on is the longest in the program's history. This marks the first time that an AU women's basketball team has won a conference title in any era.
