AU vs Navy Notes
Inside the Series: American owns a 13-11 series edge with the Naval Academy, with the Mids taking the last four outings. Navy took the first meeting of the season, defeating the Eagles 70-60 on January 24 at Alumni Arena. The last AU win came on 3/5/04.
The Coaching Matchup: American is headed up by Melissa McFerrin, who is in her second season with the Eagles. McFerrin's squad owns a 6-19 record, 3-9 in the Patriot League after dropping a 74-55 home game to third-place Holy Cross on Saturday. Tom Marryott is at his third year at the helm of the Navy Midshipman, compiling an overall record of 37-47. Marryott has never lost to American while heading up the Mids.
The Story: American enters into today's contest with a 6-19 overall record and a 3-9 conference mark after dropping four straight. Last time out the Eagles were downed by the defending Patriot League champion, Holy Cross. Tonight will be the last home game of the season for American as the team will honor seniors Tala Hadavi and Alicia Zorzetto. The Eagles will attempt to defeat Navy for the first time since Melissa McFerrin took over last season. The Eagles lost to the Mids three times last year, including in the opening round of the Patriot League Tournament. Earlier this season Navy bounced back from being eight down at the half to come back and defeat the Eagles by 10 at Alumni Arena. With Hadavi sidelined for the past three games with a knee injury, several Eagles have filled in to contribute on the offensive end. Against Holy Cross, freshman Nicole Ryan tied a career-high with 16 points. Sahar Nusseibeh is averaging double digits in league play and junior Tara Williams has been consistent, scoring almost 10 ppg.
Scouting Navy: Navy comes into tonight's game closing out a three game road streak which had them losing to Holy Cross before defeating Colgate 80-62 on Saturday. The Mid's offense features three players averaging double-digits in scoring with senior guard Ashley Pelzek leading the way with 12.0 points per game. Junior Carly Meyer is second on the team in scoring with 11.1 ppg, also leading Navy in rebounding with 6.9 rebounds per game. Senior Lauren Skrel has a knack for finding the open teammate, dishing out a team-high 107 while still averaging 10.3 ppg. Navy also boasts three players who shoot more than 42 percent from three point range. As a team, the Mids are shooting 42 percent from the floor and are one of the PL's top teams in free throw percentage, hitting 72 percent from the charity stripe. Navy owns a 6-5 overall record on the road, including 3-3 in conference play. The Midshipmen are currently in fourth place in the PL.
One Last Time... Tonight will be the last time two American University seniors play in Bender Arena. Seniors Tala Hadavi and Alicia Zorzetto will be honored before the game for all of the time and hard work they have given the Eagles. Hadavi transferred to AU three years ago but has played just 30 games in an American uniform due to knee injuries in her two seasons. Despite missed two-thirds of last season and three games this year she still has amassed 400 points in her career and is currently tied for the record in single-season three pointers with 61 in 2005-06. Hadavi leads the team in scoring this season with 14.9 ppg and over 16 ppg in conference contests, both in the PL top-five. Zorzetto, a 6-0 forward from Niagara Falls, Ontario, has been with the Eagles since the 2002-03 season, missing one year due to a knee injury. Zorzetto is the only senior player to have played on the Eagle team that went to the Patriot League Championship in 2004.
AU vs The Patriot League... American owns an 62-42 record all-time against the Patriot League and a 39-35 record in their four seasons of league play. AU is 3-9 this season, losing at home to Holy Cross in its last outing.
Eagle Snap Shots:
Nusseibeh Shut Down: Last time American played Navy, Sahar Nusseibeh was held to 0 points for the first time in a PL game all season. Nusseibeh has scored in double figures in eight out of her 12 career conference games.
Frosh is Fifth: Eagle freshman forward Tish Curry currently ranks fifth in conference rpg, with 7.3 per contest. Curry is just .2 behind fourth-placed Gretchen Poinski of Colgate.
Beyond the Arc: The Eagles are tied for fourth in the Patriot League in three-point field goals made, averaging 5.00 per contest in league games.
An AU Win Would: Break AU's four-game losing skid ... give Melissa McFerrin her first win against Navy ... give AU it's first win over the Midshipmen since the 2003-04 Patriot League Tournament.
