American Women's Basketball Falls To Holy Cross 67-62 In Title Game

Washington, D.C. - The Crusaders of Holy Cross edged reigning champion, American University, 67-62, for the 2000 AU Tip-off Classic title this afternoon in Bender Arena.

Down by nine points, 56-65, with 1:55 to go in the game, the Eagles rallied back on a 6-2 run to inch four points closer, 62-66, but came up just short as the Crusaders ran down the clock to claim the 2000 AU Tip-off Classic Title.

Holy Cross' (3-4) Jeanette Paukert led three in double-figures as she tallied 21 points. All-Tournament Team selection Katie O' Keefe tallied 14 points, while Tournament MVP Amanda Abraham posted 13 points. The Crusaders shot 41% to the Eagles 33% this afternoon to top future Patriot League foe American.

American (2-5) was led by All-Tournament team selection, Hollie Steinman (F, Pittsfield, MA/Taconic) who posted a team-high 20 points, while freshman Christina Black (G, Upper Marlboro, MD/Elizabeth Seton) added 16 points. Senior Jina Lewis (F, New Castle, DE/William Penn) chipped in 10 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.

The Eagles built a five point lead, 29-24, at the half behind a Steinman layup with :36 seconds remaining in the half. The Eagles were paced by Steinman's 10 points and Lewis' six boards, while Holy Cross was powered by 10 points from Amanda Abraham.

Earlier this afternoon, Delaware State College topped St. Francis College of New York, 64-53, for the consolation. The Eagles are back in action on Friday, December 8, 2000 when they take on WNIT participant the University of Cincinnati at 7:00 p.m. in Bender Arena. The Crusaders head back to Massachusetts to face Fordham University on Tuesday, December 5, 2000 at 7:00 p.m.
