Washington, D.C. - The American University Women's Basketball put together a late rush at the end of regulation only to watch Western Illinois prevail in overtime, upending the Eagles 72-66 in the consolation game at the Iowa Gazette Tournament on Sunday.
Western Illinois (1-3) held the Eagles to less than 29 percent shooting from the floor in the second half, which allowed the Westerwinds to chip away at the Eagles' second half lead. The Westerwinds were led by Becky Tyo's 20 points and 11 rebounds.
American (0-4) was unable to build on its 37-31 halftime lead. The Eagles depended on their three-point shooting down the stretch, but hit a mere three-for-11 in the end. AU was led by Danielle Johnson's (G, Jr., Pittsburgh, PA/Woodland Hills) 15 points, including three treys. Erin Brady (G, So., Weatherly, PA/Marian Catholic) also added 15 points, while senior Jina Lewis (F, New Castle, DE/William Penn) chipped in 10 points.
The Westerwinds continued to edge the Eagles throughout the second half cutting AU's lead to a mere four points with 3:52 to play in the game. In a heated game marked by six ties and no winner at the end of regulation, the game was forced into a final overtime period. The lead changed hands twice in overtime before Western Illinois scored the game's final six points to build upon a 66-66 tie with a minute to play.
American will host future Patriot League rival Navy on Wednesday, November 29, 2000, at 5:30 p.m., while Western Illinois returns home to face cross-state rival Illinois State.
