Washington, D.C. -Senior center Jina Lewis (New Castle, DE/William Penn) had 20 points to lead two in double figures as the American University Women's Basketball team topped MI Express, 66-53, in exhibition in Bender Arena this afternoon.

The Eagles took their largest lead of the game, 63-49, on a layup by Christina Black (Fr.-R, G, Upper Marlboro, MD/ Elizabeth Seton). AU never relinquished as they shot 44% for the game and out rebounded the Express 45-43. Lewis earned her first double-double of the season tallying 20 points and 14 rebounds, while Black added 10 points.

MI Express, were led by Patty Dixon's nine points and Shonda DeBerry's seven rebounds. The Express shot 34 % for the game, but suffered 34 turnovers and fell victims to AU's eight blocks and 21 steals.

Freshman Anastasia Goncharova's (G, Boyds, MD/Newport School) three-pointer with :08 seconds remaining in the half gave the Eagles a four-point cushion, 28-24, at the break. Down by one point, 17-18 with 6:22 remaining in the half the Eagles' Maria Werries (So., G/F, Pittsburgh, PA/Oakland Catholic) connected for a three-point play to give the Eagles back the lead and set up a scoring surge that never saw the Eagles relinquish their lead in the final minutes of the half. Lewis led the Eagles' with 11 points, while the Express were led by DeBerry's five points.

The Eagles continue exhibition play as they take on Strakonice on Sunday, November 8, 2000 at 2:00 p.m., before opening their non-conference season at Bucknell on November 18, 2000 at 5:15 p.m.
