WASHINGTON - American University women's basketball led from wire to wire to wrap up regular-season play with a 60-46 win over Lafayette on Saturday afternoon in Bender Arena, heading into the Patriot League Tournament with a 6-8 conference record.
AU opened the first half on a 13-3 run with Liz Hayes (Easton, Pa./Easton) netting three treys and Jessica Tenuta (Fayetteville, N.C./Terry Sanford) sinking a bucket of her own. Keeping the momentum, American went into the lockerroom leading 28-19, with Hayes finishing the opening stanza with 10 points.
American came into the second ready to extend its lead, with Nicole Ryan (Clearwater, Fla./Clearwater) hitting a bucket from downtown to give AU a 45-31 advantage, the largest of the day, over the Leopards with 8:04 remaining. Ryan finished with nine points in the win. Abby Lipskis (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate) played strong in the paint netting eight points, registering eight rebounds and tallying one block against the Leopards to wrap-up her regular-season career in Bender Arena and bury all hopes of a comeback for Lafayette.
Led by Lipskis, the Eagles outrebounded the visitors 43-29 and also held the 20-12 advantage in points in the lane. Hayes tallied a game-high three steals, with AU forcing the Leopards to commit 23 turnovers, scoring nine points off of Lafayette's mistakes.
The 2006-07 series between the two foes is split and American remains undefeated at home in the all-time series against Lafayette. American University returns to action Saturday, March 3 in the opening round of the Patriot League Tournament being held at Navy in Annapolis, Md.
