AU Drops Heartbreaker at UNC-Wilmington in Women's Basketball

UNC Wilmington held American to five points in the final five minutes of the second half as it rallied for a 52-48 win over the Eagles Sunday in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action at Trask Coliseum.

UNC Wilmington upped its record to 9-15 on the season and 1-12 in the CAA. Meanwhile, American falls to 4-20 and 2-11. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Lady Seahawks while AU sees its current losing streak extended to seven games.

American held a 42-37 lead with 6:01 on the clock in the second half following a lay up by Hollie Steinman. UNCW rattled off five unanswered points tie the game at 42-all on a three-pointer by freshman guard Jennifer Kapper and a lay up by sophomore guard Jan Williams off a feed from Kapper. UNCW grabbed its first lead in the second half on a foul line jumper by Rachael Friesen-Norwood with 4:04 left. Jina Lewis's basket gave American its last lead, 45-44, with 3:49 left.

Norwood converted both ends of a one-and-one with 2:21 on the clock, for a 46-45 advantage, and the Lady Seahawks never looked back. UNCW made 4-of-7 attempts from the foul line in the final minute of the game to seal the win.

The Eagles led at the half, 31-27, as the top foul shooting team in the CAA went 11-for-11 from the charity stripe. Maria Werries scored all 11 of her points in the first half. Williams led UNCW with 11 first half points on 3-of-4 shooting from three-point range.

Williams led all scorers with a career-high 15 points while Kapper added 13 for UNCW. Werries led three AU players in double figures with 11 points while Steinman and Lewis each chipped in 10.

UNCW will return to action Thursday when its travels to Greenville, N.C. for a 7 p.m. tip off with East Carolina. American will return to action Sunday, Feb. 25, when it travels to Richmond for a 7 p.m. start.
