Sophomore guard Erin Brady (Weatherly, PA/Marian Catholic) scored 21 points to lead American (4-13, 2-4 CAA) to a 69-61 win against East Carolina (9-8, 4-2 CAA) in a Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball game in front of 210 at AU's Bender Arena tonight.
Brady fell two rebounds short of a triple-double, adding a game-high 10 assists, eight rebounds and four steals. Danielle Johnson (Jr., G, Pittsburgh, PA/Woodland Hills) contributed 11 points for American, and Maria Werries (So., G, Pittsburgh, PA/Oakland Catholic) and Jina Lewis (Sr., F, New Castle, DE/William Penn) each chipped in 10 points.
Prior to tonight's loss, ECU's only conference defeat of the season came at the hands of CAA powerhouse Old Dominion. The Pirates got within three points at 11:54 left in the game on a Tali Robich three-pointer, but the Eagles held on down the stretch, hitting 7-for-12 free-throws to secure the game.
East Carolina was led by the play of their bench with Roc Canady and Nikki Brown scoring 12 points each and Angela Sye grabbing a team-high seven rebounds.
The Eagles jumped out to their largest lead of the game, 29-12, on a Kaitlin Schuyler (Fr., G, Baltimore, MD/Mercy) lay-up with 6:55 left in the first half. Brady's 12 first-half points led AU to an eight point advantage, 31-23, at halftime.
ECU next plays at George Mason on Sat. at 2:00 p.m. while American hosts Richmond on Mon., Jan. 29 at 7:00 p.m.
