HARRISONBURG, Va. - Junior transfer Kunika McCoy scored 23 points to lead James Madison (2-2, 9-6) to a 71-60 win over American (1-4, 3-13) in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball Thursday night.
McCoy hit six three-pointers en route to a JMU career scoring high. Also in double figures for the Dukes were senior Stacey Todd with 16 and sophomore Nadine Morgan with 12.
Sophomore guard Erin Brady scored 12 points to pace American to an eight-point lead, 24-16 at 7:38. The Dukes cut the margin to three (34-31) at halftime, then opened the second half with an 11-4 run that put JMU ahead 42-38 at 16:45. In that run McCoy hit two three-pointers and freshman G'Ann Lauder also had a three-pointer.
AU came back to tie the game at 42-42 at 14:55, but the Dukes then went on an 11-2 scoring run to pull away for good. Morgan scored six points and Todd five as JMU took a nine-point (53-44) lead with 10:34 remaining. The Eagles got no closer than nine points the rest of the way.
It was the ninth loss in AU's last 10 outings.
