The Eagles broke an eight-game losing streak, beating UNC Wilmington, 71-53, today in front of 286 at Bender Arena.
AU (3-12, 1-3 CAA) had four players score in double figures and shot 26 of 35 (74%) from the free-throw line to secure a victory against UNC Wilmington (7-6, 0-3 CAA). The Eagles took their biggest lead of the game, 54-33, on a Jina Lewis (Sr., F, New Castle, DE/William Penn) lay-up with 9:01 remaining and forced 38 Seahawk turnovers for the game in getting the win.
After missing seven games due to a foot injury, Christina Black (Fr.-R, G, Upper Marlboro, MD/Elizabeth Seton) returned to score a game-high 14 points and added 5 assists to lead American. Hollie Steinman (Jr., F, Pittsfield, MA/Taconic) added 12 points, 3 blocks and a team-high 10 rebounds along with Maria Werries' (So., G, Pittsburgh, PA/Oakland Catholic) 11 points and Erin Brady's (So., G, Weatherly, PA/Marion Catholic) 11 points and six steals.
Krissy Riggs and Vicky Harper each scored 11 points to lead the Seahawks who shot only 31 percent from the field (18-58). Tracy Morgan added a game-high 14 rebounds as UNC Wilmington outrebounded AU, 52-32.
In the first half, the Eagles used a 24-4 run to take a 16-point lead with 5:53 left in the half, 24-8. Riggs led the Seahawks with seven points in the half while Steinman led American with 10 first-half points, giving AU a 33-21 halftime lead.
UNC Wilmington and AU both play again on Thurs., Jan 18 with the Seahawks hosting East Carolina at 7:00 pm and the Eagles traveling to take on the Dukes of James Madison at 7:00 pm.
