The Eagles' slump continued today as AU dropped its third straight CAA game, losing to Virginia Commonwealth, 72-56, in front of 326 in Bender Arena.
AU (2-12, 0-3 CAA) had three players score in double figures, but it was not enough to overcome their 30 turnovers and 0-5 performance from behind the arc. The Eagles cut the lead to seven, 45-38, with 14:58 left in the game, but VCU (9-3, 1-1 CAA) went on a 22-8 run to take their largest lead of the game, 67-46, with 5:23 to play. AU made six of eight free-throws down the stretch, while the Rams hit three of four free-throws in the final minute to close out the game.
American was led by Maria Werries' (So., G, Pittsburgh, PA/Oakland Catholic) 16 points and Danielle Johnson's (Jr., G, Pittsburgh, PA/Woodland Hills) 15 points and team-high nine rebounds. Erin Brady (So., G, Weatherly, PA/Marion Catholic) chipped in 10 points and led AU with five assists.
Tawanda Washington scored a team-high 14 points for the Rams and grabbed 7 rebounds while Kristine Austgulen added 13 points and a team-high 8 rebounds. VCU also got scoring from Rochelle Luckett, 12 points, and came away with 18 steals for the game
In the first half, the Rams jumped out to a 7-0 start on a Candice Phelps jumper 45 seconds into the game and held a 10-point lead going into the locker room as Cynthia Wilks hit a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded.
Virginia Commonwealth next hosts East Carolina on Jan. 11 while the Eagles return home to battle UNC Wilmington on Sun., Jan. 14 at 2:00 pm in Bender Arena.
