CoSIDA Release

WASHINGTON – American University women's basketball senior guard Elina Koskimies has been voted to the Google Cloud Academic All-District II First Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday, Feb. 21.

The All-District Men's and Women's Basketball Teams, selected by CoSIDA, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America ballot. First-, second- and third-team (if applicable) Academic All-America honorees will be announced in mid-March.

Koskimies will graduate in May with a degree in finance. She is a three-time Patriot League Honor Roll member and is a member of the International Honor Society, Beta Gamma Sigma.

The senior from Helsinki, Finland, currently ranks second in the NCAA for free throw percentage, shooting 92.9 percent so far this season after missing only five in her 25 games (65-70). That season percentage is on pace to be a new program record while her .826 career percentage currently ranks second.

Koskimies also ranks among the best perimeter shooters in program history with 31 consecutive games with at least one three-point make, dating back to Feb. 24, 2018. Her current .348 shooting percentage from long-range ranks eighth in the career record books at AU, and she sits in seventh for 3-point field goals made (137) and eighth in 3-point attempts (394). She entered the season with a program record already under her belt after she tied the best single-game 3-point performance in AU women's basketball history with seven made three's against Bucknell last season.

She has also recently found herself in the career top ten for games played and sits in eighth all-time with 119 total appearances while at AU. With four games remaining in the regular season, she could move up into the No. 3 spot and would sit only three games away from tying the program record heading into the postseason.

This is the 10th time an AU women's basketball player has been selected for this honor and the first time since Lauren Crisler in 2016.

The Eagles are currently on a 13-game winning streak heading into the final four games of the regular season. AU will be on the road to play Lafayette (Feb. 23) and Holy Cross (Feb. 27) before returning home to host Bucknell on March 2 and Navy on March 6. The Saturday matinee against Bucknell will also serve as the Senior Day celebration and is set up to have home-court advantage implications for the postseason.
