WASHINGTON – American University announced Monday that it has extended the contract of women's basketball head coach Megan Gebbia, according to Dr. Billy Walker, AU's Director of Athletics and Recreation.
Although full terms of the deal were not announced, Walker said the extension was for five years and will take Gebbia through the 2023-24 season.
"First, I would like to thank President Burwell and Dr. Billy Walker for extending me this offer," said Gebbia. "I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to be at American University over the past five seasons, and I look forward to continuing my journey with the current administration.
"I am grateful for their genuine, caring and loyal support through the good and bad seasons and the trust in me to be a role model and leader for our young women. It's an exciting time to be an Eagle and I look forward to many great memories to come."
Gebbia, who has won two Patriot League Coach of the Year honors in her five seasons at American, began the current season with a 95-65 record. The Eagles have been to three postseasons, including PL titles and trips to the NCAA Tournament in 2015 and 2018.
"We are excited to announce Coach Megan Gebbia has signed to be our women's basketball coach well into the future," said Walker. "In the five years she's been our head coach, she's led us to two NCAA tournament appearances by winning our first two Patriot League titles in history.
"She's a superb on-court coach, tactician and recruiter, who leads her program with integrity. Megan attracts tremendous student-athletes who want to earn a world-class education while at the same time have a quality Division I basketball experience. We couldn't be more excited."
The Eagles, who won their season-opener last Friday against Tulsa, play host to George Mason on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
