WASHINGTON – American University head women's basketball coach Megan Gebbia announced the 2018-19 schedule on Thursday, featuring a tough nonconference schedule with five postseason qualifiers from last season. The defending Patriot League champions will play in Bender Arena four times before opening PL play at Bucknell on Jan. 3.

"I wanted to put a schedule together this season that would really challenge the returning core of players and give them an early litmus test," Gebbia said. "We are excited to open the 2018-19 season with a November that highlights three home contests and a trip to Honolulu over Thanksgiving, then a December that includes ACC and Big Ten foes in Virginia and Penn State.

"I know we will be put to the test throughout the nonconference schedule, and I am eager to assess how we grow and develop before heading into Patriot League play."

I Would Fly 5,000 Miles…
AU's nonconference schedule is highlighted by an eight-day road trip over Thanksgiving. The Eagles will start with a stop at Denver on Nov. 19 before continuing on to Honolulu, Hawaii, for the Rainbow Wahine Showdown from Nov. 23-25. The tournament features an impressive lineup with host Hawaii, and 2018 NCAA Tournament qualifiers Stanford and Florida Gulf Coast.

Speaking of the Postseason…
Five of the 11 teams on the Eagles' nonconference schedule made postseason play last season, including NCAA Tournament qualifiers Virginia, Stanford and FGCU. Virginia and FGCU each advanced to the second round of the tournament with wins over California and Missouri, respectively, while Stanford went as far as the Sweet 16 before falling to Louisville. George Mason and Penn State also qualified for postseason play in the WNIT.

Keeping the Streak Alive…
American opens the season with back-to-back home games against Tulsa (Nov. 9) and George Mason (Nov. 14). The Eagles haven't lost in Bender Arena since Feb. 11, 2017, and currently own a 20-0 run on their home court. AU will host four nonconference games in November and December – Tulsa, George Mason, UMBC (Nov. 28) and Ohio University (Dec. 29).

Nice to Meet You…
Of the 11 teams on the nonconference schedule, four will be first-time meetings with Hawaii (Nov. 23-25), Stanford (Nov. 23-25), FGCU (Nov. 23-25) and Ohio University (Dec. 29).

Doubleheader Saturday…
This year, the Patriot League will introduce Saturday doubleheaders into the men's and women's basketball schedules. American will host two dates where fans can see both squads in action. The first is on Jan. 26 against Lafayette and then on Feb. 16 against Lehigh. Women's games will tip at noon while the men will start at 4 p.m.

The Returners…
AU welcomes back two of the starters from the historic 2017-18 championship season with seniors Cecily Carl and Elina Koskimies. Junior Kaitlyn Marenyi and senior Kaitlyn Lewis also return after earning starting positions last season. Junior TaeKenya Cleveland and sophomore Indeya Sanders round out the returners.

The Newcomers…
The Eagles are excited to welcome the five-player Class of 2022 with Taylor Brown (Lakeville, Minn.), Maddie Doring (Sayreville, N.J.), Jade Edwards (Chicago, Ill.), Emily Fisher (Melbourne, Australia) and Laura Graytok (Greensburg, Pa.).
