Eagles Hold Off Colgate in 68-57 Home Victory

WASHINGTON - Sophomore Cecily Carl put up her first double-double of the season, the third of her career, to help propel the American University women's basketball team over Colgate on Monday, 68-57.

The Eagles remain undefeated in the Patriot League after winning the conference opener against Loyola Maryland on Friday, Dec. 30, 60-45.  They are 5-8 overall for the season.  Colgate now falls to 4-9 overall and 1-1 in the PL.

Carl was just one of four Eagles to tab double-figure tallies against the Raiders.  Junior Emily Kinneston led the scoring efforts for the squad with a career-high 17-point effort.  Carl was next with 15 points and tied her career-high with 12 rebounds.

Senior Lauren Crisler contributed another 11 points, and junior Michael Harris hit her third double-figure game of the season with ten points.

The Eagles shot 37.7 percent overall from the floor, and 72.2 percent from the free throw line, while Colgate went 38.3 percent from the floor and 81.8 percent from the charity stripe.

The Raiders were led by three double-digit performances, including a team-high 14-point effort from senior Katie Curtis.  Freshman Rachel Thompson and junior Kateri Stone contributed another 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Sophomore Mylah Chandler led the Raiders on the boards with eight rebounds, followed closely by sophomore Summer King, who pulled down seven.

The Eagles nearly ran away with the game in the first half, gapping Colgate by as many as 14 points before the break.  But a 17-4 run by the Raiders to kick off the second half put them back on top, 41-40, midway through the third period.

From there, the Eagles worked to rebuild their cushion, reaching a seven-point lead after a pair free throws from Carl before a couple of baskets put Colgate back within three at the break.

Undeterred by Colgate's 21-12 third period, the Eagles steadily regained their momentum throughout the final ten minutes of the game.  An 18-2 AU run, initiated by a three-point shot by Carl in the fourth minute of the period, put the Eagles back up by 14 heading into the game's final minute.

That fourth quarter run also saw six of Carl's 12 total rebounds, five of which came out of the final five minutes of regulation.

The Eagles will have a couple of quick turnarounds to close out the week, starting with a trip to Bucknell on Thursday for an 11 a.m. tipoff.  The team will then return home for a 4 p.m. matchup against Lehigh.
