Eagles Head to Navy for Final Regular Season Road Game


The American University women's basketball team plays its final road game of the regular season this Wednesday, Feb. 25, when it visits Navy in a 7 p.m. contest.

In its lowest scoring game of the season, American was able to hold off second-place Army, defeating the Black Knights, 45-42, on Saturday afternoon. Junior Michelle Holmes was the lone player in double figures for the Eagles, finishing with 14 points.

American was able to fight off a second-half rally by Army, which cut the margin to one point with 12 seconds remaining. However, junior Ari Booth knocked down a pair of free throws to increase the Eagles' lead to three points to ice the win for AU, which gained a two-game lead in the conference standings.

American enters Wednesday's game with a 19-8 overall record and a 14-2 mark in conference play. The Eagles are currently in first place in the Patriot League standings and hold a two-game lead over Army.

Senior Jen Dumiak averages 16.9 points, 6.4 assists and 5.6 rebounds per game to lead the Eagles. Junior Michelle Holmes adds 11.4 points and a team-high 6.8 rebounds per contest, while senior Arron Zimmerman is averaging 10.0 points per game.

Navy holds a 15-12 overall record on the season and a 9-7 league mark. The Mids, who are in a four-way tie for fourth place in the Patriot League standings, are coming off a 48-44 road loss at Holy Cross.

The Midshipmen have a balanced offensive attack, with 10 players averaging at least 4.5 points per game. Leading the way for Navy is freshman Taylor Dunham with 9.0 points per contest

American shot over 50 percent from the field to hold off Navy in a 59-49 victory at Bender Arena on Feb. 24. Senior Jen Dumiak finished with 17 points to lead the Eagles, while junior Michelle Holmes added 13 points and eight rebounds. Also scoring in double figures for American was senior Arron Zimmerman with 10 points.

Chloe Stapleton and Marina Muenster each scored 13 points to lead the Mids, while Justice Swett grabbed eight rebounds.

In the latest Patriot League statistical rankings, American leads the league in field goal percentage (.440), assists per game (15.8) and assist/turnover ratio (1.2), while ranking second in scoring offense (63.6) and three-point field goal percentage (.327).

Meanwhile, senior Jen Dumiak leads the way individually, ranking first in the Patriot League in assists per game (6.4), free throw percentage (.928) and assist/turnover ratio (2.7).

In Patriot League games only, the Eagles lead the league in scoring margin (+10.0), field goal percentage (.444), field goal percentage defense (.364), assists per game (16.6) and assist/turnover ratio (1.4).

Navy currently leads the Patriot League in three-point field goal percentage defense (.262), steals per game (9.4) and three-point field goals made per game (7.3), while ranking second in scoring defense (54.9), field goal percentage defense (.370) and offensive rebounds per game (13.4). Individually, Justice Swett ranks second in the league in steals per game (1.8).

In PL games only, Navy ranks first in scoring defense (52.2), three-point field goal percentage defense (.267) and three-point field goals made per game (6.4).

In the fight for first place between American and Army on Saturday, it was the defense that carried the day as the Eagles were held to below 50 points for the first time this season. Additionally, American allowed just 42 points by the Black Knights, marking the lowest scoring output by an AU opponent this year.

Senior Jen Dumiak ranks among the top 15 nationally in three statistical categories, rating second in free throw percentage (.928). She also ranks 10th in assist/turnover ratio (2.70) and 13th in assists per game (6.4). Meanwhile, she also ranks 46th nationally in field goal percentage with a mark of .506.

As a team, the Eagles rank in the top 40 in several categories, including assist/turnover ratio (1.15), where they rate 25th. American is also ranked 33rd in field goal percentage (.440), 34th in assists per game (15.8) and 35th in turnovers per game (13.7).

The Eagles close out the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 28, when they host Bucknell at 4 p.m. Prior to the contest, American will honor the three members of its senior class­­­—Shaquilla Curtis, Jen Dumiak and Arron Zimmerman.
