The American University women's basketball team will travel to West Point, N.Y. for the Patriot League Semifinals on Monday, Mar. 10 at 7 p.m. The third-seeded Eagles will take on No. 2 Army for a spot in the conference championship.
American (22-8) came back from a five-point halftime deficit and held off a late Lafayette rally for a 51-49 victory in its Patriot League Quarterfinal match on Thursday night in Bender Arena. Alexis Dobbs scored 14 points to lead American with Michelle Holmes adding 13 and Jen Dumiak tallying 10 points. Holmes and Dumiak led the Eagles with seven rebounds apiece as American held a 38-37 edge on the glass. Geleisa George finished with a team-best five assists. The Eagles shot 36.4 percent from the floor in the win but went 4-of-22 from 3-point range.
Dobbs was named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the third straight time before Thursday's quarterfinal contest. She leads American with 13.1 points per game, 4.4 assists per game and 1.5 steals per game this season, also adding 4.9 rebounds per game. Arron Zimmerman and Dumiak are also averaging double-figures, with Zimmerman notching 10.3 ppg and Dumiak tallying 10.1 ppg on the year. Sarah Kiely and Holmes have posted 5.3 rpg and 5.0 rpg, respectively, this season to lead the Eagles.
Army (23-7) defeated Boston U., 49-45, in its quarterfinal contest. 2014 Patriot League Player of the Year Kelsey Minato scored 26 points on 7-of-13 shooting and All-Patriot League Second Team selection Jen Hazlett tallied 11 points and 11 boards to give the Black Knights a 38-31 advantage on the glass. Army shot 34.8 percent from the floor and went 3-of-17 from beyond the arc in the game.
The Black Knights swept the regular season series, picking up a 64-63 victory in the first meeting in Bender Arena with a 64-60 win in West Point, N.Y. Zimmerman led American with 20 points in the loss while Dobbs notched 17 points and Dumiak added 10. Shaquilla Curtis and Dobbs posted six boards apiece but Army held a 40-28 advantage in rebounds for the game. Minato and Hazlett recorded 20 points apiece for the Black Knights with Hazlett also tallying 12 rebounds for the double-double. Army outshot the Eagles 40.7 to 37.5 percent from the floor as American held a 41.2 to 35.3 percent edge from beyond the arc.
The Eagles are 17-12 all-time against Army and hold a 7-6 edge when playing in West Point. The Black Knights own the lone win between the two squads in Patriot League Tournament play, a 75-68 win.
