The American University women's basketball team will travel to Lewisburg, Pa. to take on Bucknell in its regular season finale on Saturday, Mar. 1 at 2 p.m.
American (20-8, 13-4) secured its seventh 20-win season in program history and a top three seed in the Patriot League Tournament with a 63-50 victory over first place Navy on Wednesday night in Bender Arena. Arron Zimmerman scored 20 points for the second straight game while Alexis Dobbs chipped in 11 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Michelle Holmes tallied seven boards and Zimmerman registered a career-high four steals. The Eagles shot 45.5 percent from the field and went 3-of-10 from beyond the arc. The win also made Head Coach Megan Gebbia the winningest first year head coach at American.
Three players are averaging double-figures this season for American. Dobbs has posted a team-best 12.9 points per game with Zimmerman adding 11.0 ppg and Jen Dumiak tallying 10.0 ppg. Sarah Kiely leads the Eagles with 5.5 rebounds per game and Dobbs ranks third in the conference with 1.5 steals per game and fifth with 4.5 assists per game.
Bucknell (16-11, 11-6) clinched a home quarterfinal in the Patriot League Tournament with an 87-78 victory over Lehigh on Wednesday night in Bethlehem, Pa. Four players reached double-figures in the win led by Audrey Dotson with 19 points, Shelby Romine with 18 and Claire DeBoer and Claire Maree O'Bryan with 15 points apiece. Romine posted a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds as the Bison held a 43-37 advantage on the glass. Bucknell shot 50.7 percent from the floor and went 5-of-10 from beyond the arc in the win.
American registered its first 30-point win since February 2011 when it defeated the Bison, 77-40, earlier this season to improve to 20-12 all-time in the series. The Eagles had a balanced effort in the win, with nearly every player scoring and three reaching double-figures. Lauren Crisler scored a career-high 12 points, Zimmerman had 11 and Shaquilla Curtis added 10 points. Dobbs, Abigail Fogg and Jordan Light pulled down six boards apiece as American held a 40-39 edge in rebounds. DeBoer led the Bison with nine points and 14 rebounds in the game. The Eagles shot a season-high 52.5 percent from the floor, holding Bucknell to a 20.3 field goal percentage. American is 10-5 all-time when playing in Lewisburg, Pa.
