The American University women's basketball team will look to make history on Saturday, March 12, when it shoots for its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth. Standing in the Eagles' path is Navy, and the two teams will meet in Annapolis to decide the Patriot League crown in a game that will be televised to a live nationwide audience on the CBS College Sports Network.
American (22-8, 10-4 PL) earned a spot in the title game with an impressive come-from-behind overtime victory at two-time defending champion Lehigh in the semifinals. AU trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half but rallied with a 14-0 run to begin the second half to get back into the game. Freshman Alexis Dobbs forced the overtime session by converting a pair of clutch free throws with one second remaining in regulation to even the game at 56. In OT, senior Liz Leer stepped up with two three-pointers in the final 78 seconds -- both of which regained the lead for AU -- as the Eagles pulled out the dramatic 69-64 victory.
AU's 22 wins this season are tied with last year's team for the second-most triumphs in program history. American is one shy of the school record of 23, which was reached in the 1997-98 campaign.
The Eagles have reached the conference championship game on five previous occasions in program history, although they have come up short each time. This is AU's fourth trip to the Patriot League title game since joining the conference for the 2001-02 season, which includes last year's defeat at Lehigh. American has also appeared in the PL title contest in 2004 and 2007, while it reached the Colonial Athletic Association Championship Game in both 1987 and 1998.
American, Lehigh, and Navy (19-11, 10-4 PL) shared the Patriot League regular season championship, marking AU's third regular season title in the last four years. Both American and Navy are seeking their first Patriot League Tournament Championship.
The Midshipmen defeated No. 8 Colgate and No. 4 Bucknell to advance to the Patriot League Championship Game. Navy defeated AU in both meetings this season after getting swept by the Eagles in the three matchups during the 2009-10 campaign. AU advanced to last year's PL Championship Game with its 72-47 victory over Navy in the conference semifinals last season.
American leads the all-time series against the Midshipmen, 21-16. Navy holds a 11-7 advantage in home games, although AU has won three of the last five in Alumni Hall.
Saturday's clash will be the fifth meeting between the two programs in the Patriot League Tournament with AU holding a 3-1 record. The Eagles prevailed in quarterfinal matchups in 2004 and 2007 and in the aforementioned semifinal game last season. Navy's lone PL Tournament win against American came in the 2005 quarterfinal round.
The game will be broadcast live on the CBS College Sports Network. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 202-885-TIXX. Click here for information on parking and other gameday protocols at Navy.
