The second-seeded American University women’s basketball
team will look to make history on Saturday, March 13, when it
shoots for its first ever Patriot League Championship and NCAA
Tournament berth. The Eagles will square off against top-seeded
Lehigh in a game that will be televised to a live nationwide
audience on the CBS College Sports Network.
To earn a spot in the Championship Game, American defeated Lafayette and Navy in the Patriot League Tournament Quarterfinals and Semifinals by a combined 53 points. This is the largest combined margin of victory in the first two rounds in Patriot League Tournament history. In fact, AU’s 72-47 PL Semifinal victory over Navy set a new Patriot League Tournament record for the largest margin of victory (25 points) in the conference’s semifinal round. The previous record was 23, set on two previous occasions, including by the Eagles in 2007 when they defeated Colgate 68-45 in the semifinals.
American (22-8, 13-1 PL) and Lehigh (28-3, 13-1 PL) each claimed a share of the Patriot League regular season championship, only the second ever regular season conference title for American (2008). For the Eagles, their 13 conference wins are the most in program history, shattering the previous mark of 11, which was set on three prior occasions (1997, 1998, 2008). Additionally, American’s 22 victories this season is one shy of the all-time program record. The 1997-98 squad finished with a 23-7 record.
The Eagles have reached the conference championship game four previous times in program history, although they have come up on the short end each time. AU has lost in the Patriot League Championship Game twice, most recently in 2007, falling 56-48 against Holy Cross. American’s other appearance in the PL finals came in 2004, a 71-60 loss at Colgate. AU also appeared in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship Game in 1987 and 1998.
Saturday’s contest will be quite a test for the Eagles. Lehigh has won a Patriot League-record 28 games this season, and is currently riding a 32-game home winning streak. The defending Patriot League Champions have not lost a home game since February 23, 2008, when Lafayette defeated the Mountain Hawks, 59-43.
