The American University women's basketball team will look for its third straight win on Wednesday night when it hosts Bucknell at 7 p.m. at Bender Arena.
American (8-7, 1-0 Patriot League) is coming off an impressive 69-65 overtime victory over defending Patriot League champion Lehigh on Saturday afternoon in the conference opener. Junior Michelle Kirk led the Eagles with a career-high 32 points on 10-of-21 shooting from the floor, which included a career-best five made three-pointers and a perfect seven-of-seven from the free throw line. Senior Ohemaa Nyanin added career-bests with nine points and 13 rebounds in the win, win sophomore Ebony Edwards put together a solid all-around game with nine points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Last week, the Eagles also defeated Maryland-Eastern Shore, 57-46, in their final non-conference game of the season. Kirk paced AU with 19 points and eight rebounds, both of which were game-highs. For her effort in the two games last week, Kirk was honored as the Patriot League Player of the Week and the American University Student-Athlete of the Week Presented by GEICO.
Bucknell (4-10, 0-1 PL) comes into Wednesday's contest after falling to Navy, 70-40, in its conference opener on Friday night. This will be the final stop on a four-game road swing for the Bison, which are 1-6 on the season away from Lewisburg, Pa.
AU defeated Bucknell in both matchups in the 2008-09 campaign, recording a 61-55 victory on January 14 in Lewisburg and a 71-63 home win on February 11. The all-time series is currently knotted at 11 with the Eagles holding a slight 6-5 advantage in games played at Bender Arena.
