The American University women's basketball team will compete in the Hatter Classic in DeLand, Fla., on Monday, December 28 and Tuesday, December 29. The Eagles will open the four-team tournament against Buffalo and will play either host Stetson or St. Francis (Pa.) on Tuesday at 1 or 3:30 p.m.
American comes into Monday's contest with an even 5-5 record in the 2009-10 campaign. In their last time out on Sunday, December 20, the Eagles dropped a 75-64 decision to ACC power Maryland. AU played the Terps close, only trailing by six at halftime, and cutting the Maryland lead to one early in the second half. American's aggressive defense gave Maryland some problems throughout the contest, as the Eagles forced 19 turnovers, including 13 steals. But Maryland's size was too much for the Eagles to handle, as the Terps held a 46-21 advantage on the boards. Maryland also shot over 50 percent from the floor in the contest.
For the ninth time in 10 games this season, junior forward Michelle Kirk led the Eagles in scoring with 18 points on seven-of-14 shooting against Maryland. For her efforts against Maryland and Morgan State (20 points on eight-of-13 shooting on December 16), Kirk was named the Patriot League Player of the Week on December 21. She is currently leading the Patriot League in scoring at 20.1 points per game.
Buffalo (2-8) has dropped eight of its last nine contests since beginning the season with a victory over Niagara. Last time out on December 22, the Bulls fell to Delaware, 85-72. Buffalo's other win this season came against Youngstown State, 92-38 on December 13. Monday's meeting will be the first ever matchup between the two schools.
Depending on the results on Monday, the Eagles will play Stetson or St. Francis (Pa.) on Tuesday at either 1 or 3:30 p.m. American has never met Stetson, and has a 1-1 all-time record against St. Francis. Both matchups against the Red Flash took place in 1993 with each team recording victories on its home floor. Stetson is 1-8 this season, while St. Francis comes into the tournament with a 2-6 record.
