WASHINGTON - Six members of the American University women's basketball team have been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, league officials announced. Senior Sahar Nusseibeh earned the third honor of her career, while sophomores Michelle Kirk and Ashley Yencho each picked up their second academic award from the conference.
Nusseibeh, an international relations and political science major, achieved a 3.60 GPA in her final semester. She graduated from AU in May, and has accepted a graduate assistant position for Cincinnati's women's basketball program.
Kirk led the Eagles with a perfect 4.0 GPA in the spring semester. In addition to her work in the classroom, the Painted Post, N.Y. native earned All-Patriot League First Team honors after leading the Eagles with 14.0 points per game in the 2008-09 campaign.
Yencho was named to the honor roll for the second consecutive season with her 3.49 GPA in business administration. Additionally, sophomore Liz Leer (3.75, public communication), freshman Ebony Edwards (3.34, elementary education) and freshman Lisa Strack (3.22, business administration) received the honor for the first time in their careers. On the court in 2008-09, both Edwards and Strack were named to the Patriot League All-Rookie Team.
To be eligible for the Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average in the spring semester and be awarded a varsity letter in one of the Patriot League's winter or spring championship sports.
