Costenbader and Hunt Earn All-Patriot League Women’s Hoops Honors

Junior earns second team nod while freshman named to all-rookie team

Junior transfer Katryn Costenbader was one of two Eagles earning All-Patriot League honors this season.

WASHINGTON -- Katryn Costenbader (Silver Spring, Md./Einstein) and Chanel Hunt (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) were honored by the Patriot League as All-League student-athletes on Thursday at the Patriot League Tournament Banquet at the Newton White Mansion. Costenbader was named to the All-Patriot League Second Team while Hunt was named to the All-Rookie squad.

A junior transfer from St. Mary's College, Costenbader leads the Eagles in scoring this season with 13.9 points per game while also averaging 5.2 rebounds. She was the Patriot League Player of the Week in November after scoring a career-high 35 points in one game, the second highest single-game mark in AU history, and she was named to the AU Tip-Off Classic All-Tournament Team in the Eagles' 2001-02 debut.

Costenbader was also named to the 2001-02 Verizon Academic All-America First Team recently, boasting a 3.83 grade-point average (GPA) while helping the team to a 12-14 mark following a 4-23 campaign last season. An outstanding three-point shooter, she is currently tied for second on the American charts with 54 threes made this season.

Hunt, a 6-0 power forward, was the Patriot League Rookie of the Week in February, notching a career-high 20 points in the Eagles' win at Army and then besting herself three days later with 26 points in American's win at Lafayette. In 26 games played and just five started, the rookie is averaging 8.8 points while also grabbing 5.9 rebounds, the second best mark on the team.

The Eagles are the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament and will face No. 5 seed Colgate on Friday at 2:30 at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md.

American University became a full member of the Patriot League on July 1, 2001, after competing in the CAA since the 1985-86 academic year. The University, founded in 1893, fields a 19-sport Division I athletics program, featuring 10 women's sports and nine for men.
