WORCESTER, Mass. -- Holy Cross snapped its uncharacteristic two-game losing streak while extending its home win streak to 18 straight with a 78-61 Patriot League win over American on Saturday in Worcester, Mass. The game was the second meeting between the two programs with the Crusaders defeating the Eagles by five points, 67-62, early last season in Bender Arena.
American (7-11, 2-4 PL) jumped out to an early 16-10 lead over the four-time defending league champions, capped by a Chanel Spriggs layup. Holy Cross (13-6, 4-2 PL) responded quickly, tying the game at 16-16 with 8:30 to go in the half on a layup by Jeanette Paukert. The Crusaders pulled ahead to go into the break up 40-27, thanks in large part to reserve guard Kristin Popovics' three first half three-pointers.
The second half was controlled by Holy Cross as the Eagles were held without a field goal until Hollie Steinman connected on a jumper with 12 minutes to play to cut the Crusader lead to 51-34.
The Eagles struggled from the floor, shooting 31.0 percent for the game while committing 28 turnovers. Holy Cross had its own turnover troubles with 28 as well but the team outrebounded American 52-41 and shot 44.8 percent on the afternoon.
Steinman recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds while Spriggs turned in seven steals to bring her season total to 77, just seven shy of the AU single-season record of 84. Kaitlin Schuyler and Katryn Costenbader came off the bench to notch 12 points a piece for the Eagles.
Amanda Abraham led Holy Cross with 14 points while becoming the 18th player in school history to score 1,000 career points. Katie O'Keefe, Lisa Andrews and Popovics each finished with 10 points for the Crusaders.
American returns home to host local league foe Navy on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Bender Arena.
