WASHINGTON - Molly Creamer's 35 points helped Bucknell rally past American University in overtime, 85-76, on Saturday at Bender Arena. The win puts the Bison atop the Patriot League standings at 4-0 where they had been tied with Holy Cross, who fell in double-overtime to Lehigh.
Trailing 73-72, the result of a Creamer jumper with 15 seconds remaining in regulation, Maria Werries hit the front end of a one-and-one to tie it at 73-73. A last-second jumper by Creamer rimmed out to send the contest to overtime.
The Bison (11-6, 4-0 PL) took control of the overtime period on two free throws by Creamer and a jumper in the lane by Kate Franks. A layup by Hollie Steinman brought the Eagles (7-9, 2-2 PL) back within two but the team could muster only one more point on a Werries free throw as the Bison pulled out the hard-fought victory.
Werries led the Eagles with 23 points while Katryn Costenbader (14) and Steinman (13) also finished in double figures. Steinman recorded four blocks in the contest while Chanel Spriggs notched eight steals, six assists and eight points before fouling out in regulation.
Creamer's 35 points followed her Patriot League record 43-point outing against Army on Wednesday. Vicki Quimby and Desire Almind each netted 12 while Franks recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards. Kate Rounsley also finished in double-digits for the Bison with 10 points.
The Eagles were outrebounded by Bucknell, 58-40, but amassed 17 steals in the contest.
Next up for American is a road trip to Bethlehem, Pa., on Wednesday to face off against Lehigh University.
