Four AU Wrestlers Ranked in Preseason Polls

WASHINGTON - Four members of the American University wrestling team have been featured in individual preseason polls released recently by W.I.N. Magazine and WrestlingReport.com. Juniors Jasen Borshoff and Mike Cannon appear in both rankings while senior Christopher Stout and junior Kyle Borshoff were listed on WrestlingReport.com's poll.
"We are happy to see these four individuals gain the recognition they deserve for their individual performances," Head Coach Mark Cody said. "Each is a very talented and well rounded wrestler and we anticipate each having great seasons to lead our team."
Cannon is the highest ranked Eagle to appear on either list and is ranked No. 4 at 165 lbs. in the W.I.N Magazine poll and No. 8 at 174 lbs. in the WrestlingReport.com poll. Last year, Cannon earned his first All-America honor with a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships as a 165-pounder. He also wrestled to a third-place finish at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Tournament and won his second straight Keystone Classic Championship. Cannon finished his season with a 30-6 overall record, a 17-1 mark in dual meets and was named an NWCA Academic All-American for the second-consecutive year.
J. Borshoff enters the season at 125 lbs. ranked 20th on the W.I.N. Magazine poll and 24th on the WrestlingReport.com poll. J. Borshoff made his first appearance at the NCAA Championships in 2008 after placing fourth at the EIWA Tournament. The junior finished his season with an overall record of 17-17 and a dual record of 7-7. J. Borshoff was also named an NWCA Academic All-American in 2008 for the first time.
Stout is ranked 25th in the WrestlingReport.com rankings after making his first NCAA Championships appearance in 2008. Stout recorded an overall record of 24-15 last year and wrestled to an 11-7 mark in dual meets. The senior was also named an NWCA Academic All-American for the first time in his career.
K. Borshoff will enter the season at No. 32 on the WrestlingReport.com rankings. K. Borshoff placed sixth at the EIWA Tournament last season and finished the year with a 24-9 overall mark and a 15-3 dual meet record.
Coach Cody also announced on Friday the release of AU's 2008-09 schedule.
"We have scheduled ourselves to compete at the highest levels, both in tournaments and in dual meets," Cody said. "Each year we try to prepare ourselves for the EIWA Tournament and NCAA Championships by challenging ourselves throughout the regular season and facing top talent. We have a great group of returning wrestlers this year and several newcomers and we are all looking forward to a great season."
American will open its season on Nov. 23 at the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia, Pa. The following weekend, Nov. 29, the Eagles will be in action at the Northeast Duals in Albany, N.Y. AU will return to Philadelphia on Dec. 6 to wrestle against Drexel at North Hampton High School.
AU will take part in the highly acclaimed Midlands Championships on Dec. 26-27 in Evanston, Ill. The Midlands Championships is considered one of the year's premier wrestling tournaments and will feature several of the top teams and individuals from around the country.
On Jan. 10, the Eagles will host their first dual meet at home as they welcome North Carolina into Bender Arena. The following week, AU will take to the road again as the team travels to Navy on Jan. 16 and to the Indiana Duals in Bloomington, Ind., on Jan. 18. American will close out January with a home dual against Columbia on the 25th and at Franklin & Marshall on the 31st.
The Eagles will wrestle a busy schedule in February, beginning against Binghamton on the 1st at home. AU will then wrestle duals at Rutgers and at home against George Mason, Maryland and Bucknell within a nine day period between Feb. 7 and Feb. 15 to close out the regular season.
The 105th EIWA Championships will be held this year at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pa., March 6-7. AU has finished sixth in both of the previous two EIWA Championships and will look to improve upon their overall team finish while qualifying individuals for the NCAA Championships. This year's NCAA Championships will be held once again in St. Louis, Mo., at the Scottrade Center, March 19-21.
