AU Wrestling Will Conclude Dual Meet Schedule Thursday at Binghamton

Feb. 19, 2008

WASHINGTON - The American University wrestling team will close out its 2007-08 dual meet schedule Thursday, Feb. 21, on the road against Binghamton University in the West Gym. Thursday will also mark the return of 197 lbs. No. 1 Josh Glenn to the AU lineup as 165 lbs. No. 6 Mike Cannon and 141-pounder Kyle Borshoff look to extend their current individual win streaks to 10.

American will be returning to the mat after dropping its final Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association dual of the year on Sunday to Bucknell, 30-14. Cannon, Borshoff, Christopher Stout and Andy Semple each recorded wins against the Bison but their efforts were just not enough. With the loss, AU's overall record fell to 3-14 while its conference mark went to 1-5.

Thursday will be the Eagles fourth-consecutive match away from Bender Arena and the team's final tune up before the EIWA Tournament, which will take place this year March 7-8 in Lancaster, Pa. The dual will also have special meaning for two Eagles, as Head Coach Mark Cody and Glenn originally hail from New York's Southern Tier.

Glenn will be making his return to the AU lineup against the Bearcats after missing the team's last three dual meets. Glenn is 11-0 on the year with two major decisions, one tech-fall and two falls, and has not lost in his last 34 matches, a streak which dates back to December of 2006. The Johnson City, N.Y., native made headlines earlier this season when he captured AU's first Midlands Championship and will be looking to continue his success against his hometown team. Glenn will face sophomore Corey Waite for the Bearcats who has an overall record of 10-18.

Cannon heads into Thursday with a 21-2 overall record and a nine-match win streak. Cannon has yet to lose in 2008 and his streak includes seven bonus point victories and two wins over nationally-ranked wrestlers. His latest victory, an 11-6 decision on Sunday over Bucknell's No. 19 Andy Rendos, was the 50th of his career. Cannon is tied for the team lead in wins, has a team-high seven falls and three tech-falls, and is second on the team with four major decisions. The sophomore will face Binghamton's Brett Nelson on Thursday who is 8-21 on the year.

Like Cannon, Borshoff has yet to lose in the new year and will take the mat against Binghamton riding a nine-match win streak. Borshoff's streak includes his first win of the year over a ranked opponent, a 5-2 decision over No. 18 Ryan Williams of No. 22 Old Dominion, two major decisions, two tech-falls and one fall. Borshoff is also tied for the team lead in wins with an overall record of 21-6, is second on the team with five falls and third on the team with two major decisions and two tech-falls. Borshoff will be matched up with Binghamton's Anwar Goeres who has an overall records of 14-10.

Stout, a 157-pounder, will put his own win streak of six matches on the line Thursday. Stout's streak began on Jan. 22 with a 10-2 major decision over UNC Greensboro's Mark Ring and was bookended on Sunday against Bucknell with a 9-0 major decision over Brantley Hooks. Stout's success dates back even farther as he has won 10 of his last 12 matches and is tied with Cannon and Borshoff for the team lead in wins with an overall record of 21-10. Stout has won a team-high 15 matches with bonus points including a team best 10 major decisions and three tech-falls. Binghamton will pit Nate Patterson against Stout on Thursday. Patterson has a team leading 22 wins against 11 losses.

Binghamton is coming off a 27-9 road win over Drexel and has won two straight. On the year, the Bearcats are 12-11 and enjoyed a season best five-match win streak between Dec. 8 and Jan. 9. Binghamton is led on the mat by 149 lbs. No. 18 Kyle Fried. Fried is 15-1 overall this year and has won five matches by major decision. Patterson will enter Thursday with a record of 22-11 and two wins by major decision, one tech-fall and nine falls. 174 lbs. Josh Patterson has an overall record of 16-3 for the Bearcats with five major decisions, three tech-falls and three pins.
