Feb. 8, 2008

WASHINGTON - The American University wrestling team will travel to Piscataway, N.J., this weekend to face Rutgers in its first Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association dual in nearly a month. The Eagles and Scarlet Knights will take the mat at noon on Sunday at the College Ave. Gym.

AU is coming off a 31-12 loss to No. 22 Old Dominion on Sunday in the team's final home dual meet of the year. Despite the loss, four Eagles scored individual victories including then unranked and now No. 20 Kyle Borshoff's 5-2 decision over No. 18 Ryan Williams, marking his first victory over a ranked opponent this season. Christopher Stout, No. 7 Mike Cannon and No. 1 Josh Glenn also won decisions against ODU, 6-3, 5-3 and 4-2, respectively.

The Eagles last wrestled in the EIWA on Jan. 12 against then No. 22 Navy at home. The Eagles also dropped that match, 31-16.

American is led on the mat this year by six grapplers with winning records. Glenn, the defending 197 lbs. National Champion and current No. 1 in his weight, tops this list with a perfect 11-0 record and has a 34 match win streak which dates back to December of 2006. Glenn is 3-0 against the EIWA this year and has won five matches with bonus points.

Cannon and Borshoff, ranked seventh and 20th, respectively, in this week's Intermat Rankings, are each working toward a return trip to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in as many years. Cannon has posted an 18-3 record with a team-high six wins by fall and three wins by tech-fall. Borshoff is 18-6 with five falls. Both wrestlers are 4-0 in the EIWA.

Jasen Borshoff, Matt Mariacher and Stout are also north of .500 this season. J. Borshoff is 14-12 overall with a 3-1 mark in the EIWA. Mariacher is 12-10 overall, 3-1 in the EIWA, and has three wins by fall. Stout has a team leading 19 wins this season against 10 losses, is 2-2 in the EIWA and has won 14 matches with bonus points.

Rutgers last wrestled on Feb. 2 in a tri-meet against Clarion and Rider. Rutgers first defeated Clarion, 23-9, before falling to Rider, 19-13. 141 pounder Steve Adamcsik, 157 pounder Matt Pletcher and 165 pounder Michael Whalen each picked up two wins for the Scarlet Knights.

Pletcher has a team leading 22-4 record this season and has picked up three wins in overtime. Adamcsik is right behind Pletcher at 21-5 and has 13 wins with bonus points. Whalen and 197 pounder Lamar Brown are also putting together strong seasons for Rutgers with records of 14-10 and 17-10, respectively.
