AU Wrestling - NCAA Tournament Notes

CLEVELAND – American has its largest contingent heading to the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships since 2012 when five student-athletes compete on Thursday in the first round at the Quicken Loans Arena.

Senior Jeric Kasunic (197 pounds) punched his ticket with a fourth-place finish two weeks ago at the 114th annual Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Tournament.

Four other Eagles - fifth-year senior Brett Dempsey (285), redshirt juniors Josh Terao (133) and Michael Sprague (149) and redshirt freshman Gage Curry (125) each received at-large invitations from the NCAA Wrestling Committee.

Terao and Kasunic will be making their second straight appearance at nationals, each having finished 1-2 a year ago. Terao wrestled at 125 pounds last season. Dempsey, Sprague and Curry will be making their first trip to nationals.

Terao (12th at 133) and Kasunic (13th at 197) earned seeds in this year's draws.

Four Eagles - #12 Terao (133), #27 Sprague (149), #11 Kasunic (197) and #27 Dempsey (285) - are ranked in the most recent NCAA Coaches Panel. Curry was the fifth Eagle ranked in the RPI, finishing 28th at 125.

At the EIWA Championships, Kasunic became only the 8th Eagle since 1984 to reach 100 wins. He comes into nationals with a 101-39 record, tied for 7th all-time at AU. His 34-5 record this season has him tied for 4th on the Eagles' single-season list for wins.
