The Eagles line up for the National Anthem

DOVER, Del. – Jack Mutchnik of American Unversity rolled up a 4-1 record to finish second in the 141-pound weight class Sunday at the National Collegiate Open.

Mutchnik earned the Eagles' best showing in the tournament, which drew 26 teams from around the nation. AU sent 10 wrestlers to the event.

Mutchnik, a redshirt junior, opened his day with a technical fall that took 5:16 and advanced with a 3-2 win over Taylor Brown of Army West Point. He then scored sudden-victory period wins over Travis Layton of Rider and Corey Shie of the Army Prep School. Brian Courtney of Virginia edged Mutchnik, 2-0, in the 141 championship.

Redshirt freshman Garrett Clifford picked up a pair of wins at 133, earning a technical fall and an overtime pin in his first two matches.

Junior James Giaccia also went 2-2 for the Eagles at 141, including a major decision, as did freshman Colin Hogan, who had his first collegiate win by fall.

American will compete in the 114th Annual Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships this weekend at Hofstra University. Berths to the NCAA Division I Championships will be on the line at the conference tournament.
