WASHINGTON, D.C. – American University plays host to its first dual match of the wrestling season on Friday when the Eagles host Navy at 7 p.m. in Bender Arena.
The Eagles are 4-3 on the season, and due to a scheduling quirk have faced all seven of those matches either on the road or at a neutral site.
The Midshipmen come into Friday's match with a 5-1 mark in duals, with their only loss coming to the same No. 6 team that beat AU last weekend. Like AU, Navy won only one of the 10 bouts against the Mountain Hawks.
AU is coming off an 18-17 victory last Sunday at Brown in a match that was decided by a tie-breaker.
The Eagles earned eight near-fall points to just four from the Bears, accounting for the extra team point in the scoring. All those points came in a technical-fall victory by senior Jeric Kasunic, who won the 197-pound bout with a 16-0 score.
Kasunic is one of four Eagles nationally ranked this week by TrackWrestling.com. He is ninth in the nation at 197 and comes into Friday's match with a team-best 24-3 mark that includes a 14-match winning streak.
Navy was tied with AU for 30th in this week's TrackWrestling.com team rankings and sports five ranked wrestlers. No. 25 Jared Prince is expected to match up with Sprague at 149, while senior 174-pounder Jadaen Bernstein is the Midshipmen's top-ranked student-athlete at No. 8.
Nicholas Gil (20th at 141), Drew Daniels (25th at 165) and Michael Coleman (17th at 184) are also ranked.
American returns to the road this Sunday for a 1 p.m. dual against Old Dominion.
The Eagles are back in Bender Arena on Sunday, Feb. 4 for a noon match with Bucknell. Tickets for all AU wrestling home duals can be purchased online by clicking here.
