Terao, Kasunic win Wilkes Open Titles

Josh Terao earns a victory at Campbell

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Josh Terao and Jeric Kasunic won championship bouts to lead 10 Eagle place-winners for American University at the 85th annual Wilkes Open wrestling tournament on Friday.

Ten of the 19 AU wrestlers who made the trip earned top-six finishes in the single-day event.

Jack Mutchnik lost in the final of the 141-pound bracket, losing after the second overtime.

"The team wrestled very well today," said AU head coach Teague Moore. "Josh and Jeric came through with great performances and continued to improve their best areas of execution.

"Josh's best offensive attacks continue to improve and, what is most exciting to watch, is his ability to score from unorthodox positions. Jeric finished the day with a fall against a tough opponent and an overall dominant performance.

"Jack lost a hard-fought OT final bout, but dug deep in his effort. We are happy for him and the success that he has earned.

"We continue to improve as a group," said Moore. "It was a great way to close out 2017."

Terao defeated five opponents on his way to the win, earning a fall and a technical fall in the first two bouts before besting Joe Lobeck of Lehigh, 8-3, in the 133-pound final.

It was nearly an all-AU final at 133 pounds, as Garrett Clifford lost to Lobeck in the semifinal. Clifford went on to finish fourth in the weight class, going 3-2 on the afternoon.

Kasunic needed three victories to roll to the win at 197 pounds. He got his fifth fall of the season and the 35th of his career in the final, needing just 2:17 to win the title over Kyle Gentile of Lehigh.

Mutchnik won by fall and tech fall before getting a 3-1 decision over Travis Layton of Rider in the 141-pound semifinal. He went through both overtime periods in the championship before losing on riding time after the second overtime.

Brett Dempsey got the win over teammate Niko Camacho in the third-place match of the heavyweight bracket, beating the Eagle freshman 12-1. Both Dempsey and Camacho won three bouts on the day.

Gage Curry (3-1 at 125) and Michael Sprague (4-2 at 149) also finished third, Connor Allshouse was fourth at 174 and Kizhan Clarke got five wins on his way to a sixth-place finish at 141.

American is off for the holiday break before participating in the UNC Duals in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Jan. 5. The Eagles have a home dual against Navy on Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. in Bender Arena.
