WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – AU's coaching staff is about to have a very busy Friday.
The Eagles' three-man coaching staff will be jumping from mat to mat to help a large number American University wrestlers who will compete at the 85th Annual Wilkes Open wrestling tournament at Wilkes University.
American will send its starters, backups and redshirts to the event, dubbed "The Rose Bowl of Wrestling." AU is one of more than 30 college teams registered for the event, which has drawn nearly 300 wrestlers from around the nation.
The Eagles were ranked 23rd as a team in Division I this week by TrackWrestling.com and boast four nationally ranked wresters.
Junior Josh Terao is 13-3 overall at 133 pounds and is ranked as high as fifth in the nation (FloWrestling). He recently won the Navy Classic and placed second at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
Senior Jeric Kasunic leads the Eagles in wins (16-3) and pins (four) and his third-place finish in Vegas has him as high as 10th in the nation (Flo) at 197 pounds.
Junior Michael Sprague placed eighth in Vegas in what was likely his best national effort as an Eagle. He is 9-7 so far this season and owns a second-place finish at the Navy Classic. He was 16th this week by Amateur Wrestling News.
Fifth-year senior Brett Dempsey was 22nd in the TrackWrestling rankings at heavyweight.
Wrestling begins at 9 a.m. at Wilkes University.
The Eagles' next home match is on Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. against Navy.
